Rebecca Halls aka Beka Hoop

Rebecca Halls (AKA Beka Hoop) is a Berlin based artist from Montreal, Canada.
She specializes in Contemporary Hoop Dance choreography and performance. Founder of IHOOPU, she is also a certified yoga instructor and has been inspired by various movement techniques including the Gyrotonic Expansion System, Skinner Release Technique, The Bartinieff Fundamentals, Body Mind Centering and the extensive work and research of BKS Iyengar.

Her hooping workshops are always movement based, and she is a firm believer in the capacity of the 'body memory'.

In 2010 she was featured in the Dance for Camera film called HOOP, and is currently working on a 30-minute contemporary dance piece called SPIN that will premiere at theatres around Europe in autumn 2011. The piece researches the idea of threshold with relation to spinning and is shaped by a series of cyclical choreographic sequences woven together by hoops.

Contemporary Hoop Dance & Choreographic Techniques for Hoopers

In this workshop, you will learn contemporary dance techniques that can be applied to your hoop practice. These techniques will be taught both with and without the hoop and we will experiment with the idea of the hoop as an extension of the body. We will also explore various ways to grip the hoop and techniques for picking up and leaving the hoop(s). We will examine dynamic body positions in relation to the hoop, and how the body can echo the shapes, and pathways created by the hoop.  In the final portion of this workshop we will look at how to make choreographic choices with the hoop and learn different choreographic practices adopted from contemporary dance choreography.

Hoop Workshop with Charlie (Seduced By Circus)

Charlie’s hooping style has been strongly influenced by the traditional circus style of hooping, and she favours lighter hoops than those used in contemporary hoop dance. Her workshop will therefore focus on multiple hoop tricks, balance tricks, contact hooping and floor work. The workshop will include a variety of body conditioning techniques to improve balance, co-ordination and flexibility. The aim of this workshop is to help improve participant body positions and torso movements as well as enabling them to incorporate the use of their hands, arms, feet and legs.
